What Is A Ping?

'Ping' was originally the name of a computer network tool. It provided a basic test of whether a particular host (computer) was operating properly and whether it is reachable across the Internet from the host where the test originated. A Ping works by sending ICMP or 'request' packets to the target host and listening for replies or 'response' packets.

A ping is analogous to the active sonar used in submarines, in which an operator issues a pulse of energy at a target. This pulse of energy bounces off a target and the response of this action is received by the operator.

In fact, the author of the tool, Mike Muuss, named the tool after the sounds made by a sonar and later David L. Mills provided a backronym, "Packet Internet Grouper (or Groper)"

The meaning of the term 'Ping' has expanded since its origin. Now-a-days, Blogging and Pinging stands as the single best method off drastically increasing the number of visitors to a new site.

There are several services on the Internet that monitor Blogs for new information and post or announce the results in some way.
