eMagin to debut wearable iPod video headset
A company that makes video display products for military and industrial uses has developed a wearable headset system that plugs into Apple Computer's video iPod, according to SeattlePI.

Bellevue-based eMagin Corp. plans to unveil the device sometime this year with a suggest retail price of $600 -- about $200 more than the cost of Apple's most expensive iPod.

Dubbed the EyeBud 800, the device will display video from fifth-generation iPods in the front of one eye using optical technology designed to give the picture a higher resolution and make it appear larger than on the iPod's screen.

"With the proximity of the screen to the eye, and the magnifying effect of the company's optical technology, the company says that using the headset is akin to watching a 105-inch display from 12 feet away," according to the report.

The EyeBud system reportedly uses a separate control module, about the size of the iPod, which includes a rechargeable battery pack.

"Suddenly you've got this big-screen, movie-screen, home-theater experience, wherever you are," said Gary Jones, eMagin's president and CEO.

Consumers will likely be able to get their first look at the EyeBud 800 a this week's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, which eMagin will be attending.

Our Take:

WOW! Sounds awesome! Love to give them a try but I can't see the average ipodder shelling out $600 for a unit (hint hint, wink wink, nudge nudge, know what I mean Gary?!?)

Well, unless eMagin wants to send us a test unit that we can write about, we will have to wait for the price to come down a bit.

Until then,

Michael Valiant

  New, High-End Podcasting Software
M-Audio today introduced Podcast Factory Deluxe, the latest in the company's portfolio of affordable, easy-to-use podcasting solutions. In late 2005, M-Audio introduced Podcast Factory, the industry's first product to include all the necessary components for users to get started in podcasting.

Podcast Factory was met with strong demand and in turn exposed a market segment that required a high-end podcasting solution. With the addition of Podcast Factory Deluxe, M-Audio now boasts a robust, scalable line of podcasting solutions to suit every user need and ability, from novice to advanced user.

"The Podcasting industry has experienced tremendous growth in the past year, and products like M-Audio's Podcast Factory have paved the way for the average consumer to get involved," said Ben Bajarin, analyst at Creative Strategies. "Podcasting gives virtually anyone a platform to be heard, and M-Audio's Podcast Factory products give users an affordable and painless way to begin podcasting."

Our Take:

The whole Podcast Industry is still wide open and M-Audio has provided yet another quality product to fill the need.

One of the most common questions we get at Podcast Empire is "what software should I use to record and mix all my sounds?". While paying for M-Audio's products may not be right for you if you are just starting out, it is definately the product of choice when you are ready to get serious.

  Why Do Men Still Rule?
A survey recently conducted by Mediaweek found that of the 1000 web users surveyed that 30% of them had heard of "podcasting." Of those, about another 30% had actually listened to a podcast, and 80% of those people were men.

So what does it all mean? It's hard to say, maybe there just isn't much out there that is particularly interesting aside from toilet humor, political rantings, and foul language. As a man, this appeals to me. As a woman, it doesn't.. or, I mean, if I were a woman this wouldn't appeal to me.. if I had any idea what women liked.. err, ok whatever, you get it.

I guess what remains to be seen is whether or not something like an online soap opera (other than Google's stock price) would do well. And now that I have completely stereotyped women I think I will leave it at that.

Until next time,

Brent Paine

Is Apple doing away with their entry level iPod?!?
It may be too early to speculate that the iPod Shuffle -- Apple's once highly anticipated entry-level flash digital music player -- may be out of the big picture as a result of the Macworld Keynote a week from Tuesday.

Even so, the Mac web is buzzing with reports concerning the replacement of the Shuffle line of iPods, or perhaps even discontinuance of the inexpensive player altogether.

Nevertheless, there will surely be a change in the iPod lineup to accomodate for the fate of the Shuffle.

  Honor Roll
Queen Elizabeth has named iPod and iMac designer, Jonathan Ive, to the Queen’s New Year’s Honors List and was named a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) on Saturday.

The title recognises Ive’s achievements in industrial design as leader of the team that produced not only the iPod but also the iMac, iBook and Powerbook computer lines in his nearly 13-year career at Cupertino, California-based Apple.

“We are proud as can be that Jony is receiving such a prestigious commendation,” said Apple in a statement quoted by the BBC.

Out Take:
How awesome is that? It's certainly a well-deserved award based on the popularity of the iPod, but the iMac? Just call it what it is, it is for the design of the iPod. Geez.
