Will You Be Picking Up A Video iPod? Or Will You Stick With Your iPod Nano?
So Apple had their big release party and announced their secret... Apple was hitting the market with a video iPod!! Exciting news, but really no secret.
So I have now had a chance to give the video iPod a cursory examination and have pretty much decided that there is no way I will be 'upgrading'.
First of all... I am not convinced that I WANT to watch more than a few minutes of video on a screen that is only 2.5 inches square... Even if the picture quality is excellent.
Then of course, Apple did what Apple always seems to do, and they switch around all of the connections, so few of your current iPod accessories will work with it.
And the video format that it takes is certainly not standard, so unless you plan on recoding most of the video that you do have, you will have to pay Apple for the tiny bit of content that they are currenlty offering...
I am sure that they will eventually offer more content than the few episodes of
Lost and
Desperate House Wives that they currently have available, but are you realy going to want to pay to watch a program on a tiny screen, when you can TIVO it and watch it in the comfort of your living room on your big screen? I don't think so.
I remember Steve Jobs mentioning a while back that Apple did not want to get into the Video iPod business because they did not believe anyone would pay to watch video on a screen that was less than 3.5 inches square... I agree... so what happened Steve?
At the end of the day, I think that Apple really pushed this product to market. It doesn't have that WOW factor that a new product like this should have (that any new product should have!). I think Apple just wanted to get in the game early, and rushed to do it; there are other companies that offer better versions of the video iPod.
And what happens if the screens (which are the same as on the iPod Nano) get scratched? While not a HUGE problem on an iPod Nano, it would definately hinder watching video on such a small screen....
I am going to take a closer look at the video iPod... but I think I will sit this one out....

Big Business Vs The Indy Underground in the Podcast Ring
In this corner.... We have Corporations, Big Business Ventures, Commercial Joint Ventures and Product Pimps... This side has joined the Podverse (yes, another made up Podcast Empire word - Podcast + Universe = Podverse... Shakespeare made up hundreds of words and I can too!) late in 2005, coming late to the game only after they were convinced there was money to be made and young audiences to saturate... This group is in it for the money, either directly or indirectly, because of this they have some money to put into their shows, giving them a veil of shiny, polished content, but at the end of the day, they are all trying to sell you something...
And in this corner... We have The Indy Underground, the Diehards, and the people that are in it for the love of the game... This side has never joined the Podverse... they created it. While making a few bucks off their Podcast would be great few of them are in it for the money. This group does what they can with what they have and are interesting because, if nothing else, each and every one has a unique perspective expressing a unique topic...
Which side are you on? Which side are you most interested in? Who are you rooting for? Don't underestimate your power... The Podverse was created by people just like you, and people just like you will determine the future direction the medium takes. It is easy to get pulled in by the Big Business types who have the money and knowledge (or money to buy the knowledge) to put together a good show that, at least on the surface, gives you what you want... but if Big Business wins out and becomes the dominant force in the Podverse, eventually they can stop giving us what we want and will start giving us what THEY want... just cause they can...

Sedu Hair Style Product Contest
I received an email last week asking if we had a Podcast that dealt with Beauty Tips and Beauty Products. I have to admit that this is not a podcast topic that would have occurred to me naturally and I appreciate the question from Laura in Iowa.
I had a look through our podcast directory and can honestly say that I could not find a single podcast that discusses Beauty Products as a regular topic. I searched in Google for a bit and found a couple, but they were all from commercial corporations (so they will be a little biased).
So we decided to use our first life-line and would like to poll the audience. Not only that, but we are going to be giving away a great Sedu Hair Style Product to only lucky participant.
